Can you wear a slide?

Check out the band Morphine. All the basslines were done on a 2-string slide bass.

Otherwise...work on your tapping abilities!

You can get a capo and check
out some alternative tuning.

Howbout learning KB bass but
using your right hand [beats
me what benefit that will be
after you've recovered ... ]
or get a set of bass pedals
[organ foot pedals] and beat
a bass parade drum with your
good hand. With your injured
left appendage can you still
bend the elbow and hold onto
a bottle or a glass?

You know a killer bass by its onion breath. - Golem

You could learn to play trumpet! You only really need one hand for that and you could use it when your hand is better. You could even make a hands-free trumpet holder thing so you can play the trumpet and the bass at the same time. Put the trumpet, the bass, and the foot drum pedals together and you're a one-man-band!! I wanna hear you play the Chicken, every instrument simultaneously!

You only need one hand until you need to play in tune! Trumpets aren't properly intonated (unless you play a Monette) so you have to work all these little slides with your left hand!

One should NEVER use the phrases "you only need one hand" and "the chicken" in the same sentence.......NEVER!

Let's just choke that one NOW!

Jaco: You know you've got that tape recorder on Duke Ellington's book!
Interviewer: Which book is that?
Jaco: The only one!

I only meant one hand on the Trumpet (which I was apparently wrong about). Anyway, if you make a hands-free trumpet holder then you could play it with no hands and then play the bass with both-BAM, one-man band!!

There are actually devices like you describe, sorta. They hold the trumpet and the idea is you hold down the valves, and then you have to tighten your lips to get the pitch without pushing. If you push, the trumpet moves forward and you can't play. Kinda like fretting correctly.

And, because "The Chicken" is in Bb, you can actually hit some of the notes on a trumpet without using any valves.

SEE?? It would work! SO, SoulChicken, by the end of August I want to hear a recording of you playing the Chicken by yourself. Just find one of those trumpet holders and some sort of foot-operated drum kit, and your good to go!

Lets see...

Trumpet playing about 3 of the correct notes...
Bass line
Foot operated drum machine-one button for on/off, one for "fill."

It can be done...
