Hey y'all; i'm new here; my 16 yo son has been playing for about 3 years and is a growing into a fine player; very much influenced by Jaco. Anyway... I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale (Sea Ranch Lakes actually) and when I was in high school me and my best friend loved live music, and would go to rock / blues clubs equipped with our fake ID's. We went to the Wooden Spoon on Oakland Park Blvd (about a mile or so west of the intercoastal bridge) to see I think Big Mama Blue and her band. This must have been around 1980/81, well Jaco was there. I'd heard of him but at the time was not familar with his music. He went up on stage and started jammin with Big Mama's band....The light went on- I was totally captivated / absolutely blown away! I was a big Steve Morse/Al Dimeola fan at the time (still am) but Jaco was shreddin- playing a fast as a guitar player on a bass. Crazy harmonics...He played for a while (hour or so) I got his autograph on a bar napkin (I wish I still had it!) He was a little stand-off ish when I asked for it. But he was cool.
Just wanted to share that story; It was a experience I will never forget!

Wow..........I lived in Hollywood during the years 1980/81 and was not aware at that time, of just how much time Jaco was spending down there then. If I had been, I would have sought his gigs/presence out. I was a Jaco fan from the first time I heard "Jaco Pastorius" in 1975 and even moreso after seeing him in Weather Report in 1976.

By the time I got to Florida to live, I figured he was always on the road and quite frankly, didn't even know he still lived in Florida. I could kick myself for having been in such close proximity and not know it.

Great story!

It was really cool. I am pretty certain he was not part of the show, more of a sit in/ let me play. I do remember he was playing a fender, but can't remember if it was fret-less or not. I remember he saw fairly short (i'm about 6'1) with the long black hair. Incidentally, my next door neighbor at the time (and school mate) was Rob Schuh, a world-class jazz drummer who, Rob has told me jammed with Jaco a couple of times (Rob owns "beat bop drums" I think it's called, a high-end custom drum & drum Kit builder...any drummer here need to check him out...Also John Medeski of Medeski-Martin & Wood lived right down the street and went to my high school ...

Hey wdent, I have been playing guitar (mainly piddling) for about 23 years. My 16 yo son is the bass player...very much influenced by Jaco. He started with drums (taught by Paul T. Riddle original member of The Marshall Tucker Band) then went to bass. His bass teacher was a incredible guitar player, and schooled him on the technical & theory side of music and playing..he turned my son on to Jaco.
I play my sons first bass occasionally. My son and I (when he's not playing with his band...The Speak Of..check'em out on myspace.com/thespeakof ) jam and do a lot of improvisational lead inter-playing...sorta like Duane Allman & Dicky Betts, but my son is playing a bass. Really love playing music.

I hear you when you say you enjoy playing music. It seems that when I am not playing it, I am thinking about it or listening to it and thinking about it.

Hello Guys,

I came across your thread as I was searching the web For Jaco info. If I may, I'd like to share my Jaco story. It was 1986(?) at Blues Alley in DC. My friends and I were (and still are) huge Jaco fans, and got ther early and grabbed a table directly in front of the stage; we're talking 5 feet from Jaco. I had a portable tape recorder and recorded the show, but the audio was crap. Anyway, after the first set, we were informed that there were 2 showes, and we would either have to leave or pay for tickets to the 2nd show! We had the best table in the place, so we coughed up the money. Jaco (and Kenwood Denard on drums/Hiram Bullock on guitar) came out, took on look at us and told the audience that since we had heard all the songs from the 1 show, he was gonna do all new songs for the 2nd! The croud went wild and he put on another kick ass show! After the show, I approached Jaco at the bar and showed him his album (1st solo)and he said "So YOU'RE the one who bought my album". We both laughed and he was happy to sign it for me. Then he asked if I would like to go backstage and get Hiram and Kenwoods autographs as well! I said no and walked away......NOT!! Kenwood and Hiram we great guy and signed my album as well. That my friends, was one of the greatest nights of my life! To this day I have that album framed and on my wall.....:)

Yeah.............Blues Alley is a really cool, small club and there is no "backstage" area so to speak........at least not one where the performers can arrive on stage from. There is a room upstairs which is public access to the restrooms, where bands can go to change and gather before the show if they want but in the end, the club affords great access to the performers who end up walking downstairs and into the room to get to the stage. I saw Joe Zawinul at the same club about a year before he passed away. To have seen Jaco play in that environment would have been the peak of my musical viewing experience for sure.
