There's a re-release of Shadows & Light out now on DVD (and maybe VHS) on the Sony Music label. I've *just* got it, and am about to go watch it.

The sound it meant to be rather better than the old Japanese DVD which has been the best way to see it until now. I'll report back when I've seen it...

I just recently found out that a friend of mine is in possession of the '78 Weather Report - Rockpalast Germany-video so I borrowed it. Haven't seen the whole thing yet but I must say that people have a tendency to exaggerate some things about Jaco on stage.

Sure, he plays good, which is most important, but people keep talking about the amazing things he did on stage (someone told me he had done a backflip off of a wall while playing one of his most intense licks...). Not that I believed all the rumours but I was still disappointed when the two most noticable things were his "strut" and when he jumped on his bass from his amp.

Just saying that the truth will often do more good than exaggerations since no one will be disappointed when they actually see/hear/whatever the real deal.

For me, seeing Jaco play for the first and only time live (Weather Report, '77) was an experience I haven't forgotten. It had nothing to do with stage antics. Every musician I knew, myself included, had already heard his solo L.P. and subsequent work with Weather Report on Heavy Weather as well as his "guest" appearance on Black Market. There was so much respect and awe built up around his musicianship, and the fact that this cat was basically our ages (two years older) and playing with the HEAVIEST dudes in music. I mean, the reverence was real. All of the most serious cats that I had seen up to that time (Stanley Clarke, Chick, etc.) were pretty staid and serious acting on stage (more like classical musicians who took themselves a little too seriously for my taste). I figured Jaco had to be THE MOST SERIOUS of them all. So imagine my surprise when the band took the stage and I spotted Jaco, with his hair past his shoulders (last picture I had seen was his cover photo on Jaco Pastorius), and his Philly cap on, and his freewheeling, having a blast attitude while playing his ass off stage presence. I just sensed that at that time, Jaco was a completely free and fearless INDIVIDUAL. There was something communicated that evening that went way beyond the music.

The main thing is the music. The stage presence was just him feeling the vibe. Same with Jimi Hendrix - when he lit his guitar or smashed it. Jimi was so full of the joy he was feeling it was just natural to do those things.

I didn't know jaco was doing anything as wild as backflips though. He must have been playing hot if he'd done that.

I've seen this, but I'm quite curious to know some stuff about it. I must admit I've never heard of Michel Hatzigeorgiou, but apparently he's worked with Toots Thielemans, and toured with Jaco at some point, but on the video it looks like he's turned up to surprise him, which means it could be the first time the two met. I don't really rate his bass playing too highly on the evidence of that video, but then it is almost twenty years old.

Anybody got any more info?

Michel is a killer bassist. I rate him among the best european players. Check out his stuff with his current trio "A.K.A Moon".

Hi Franske,

It totally agree with you: from my point of view he is one of the greatest bassists that Europe has to offer. The guy definetly has his own style, but also knows the Jaco songbook like no one else. Actually he is touring with a Belgian band right now that only plays Mitchell material...you should hear his take on classics like Hejira and The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines. He really made an impression while performing during the Jaco tribute in Amsterdam last year and from a personal point of view I must admit that the jam I witnessed between Michel and Hatzi at Modeste's place was one of the most impressing performances I have ever seen or heard....

By the way: the So What performance was not the first time Jaco and Michel met: they actually played together in december 1984 during workshops in Guadeloupe and Martinique. Other bassists were there too, like Reno Steba.

Greetings,

Jeroen.

That sounds like a "private" jamsession you witnessed in Modeste's house! Is that so? Man I would have loved to hear that..
I still have the radio tapes of that VPRO radiobroadcast of the Melkwegtribute Modeste organised. I love Michel's playing. What crazy tunes! He is way out there.

Hi Frans,

Yes that was a private jam. Didn't mean to sound 'incrowd' though... Do you remember that tune Michel did with the delay in it? That song is actually called 'Jaco'...it's on one of the Aka Moon albums... By the way, his drummer Stephane Galland is now in the Zawinul Syndicate!

Hey Frans just checked your website: what a coincidence, I interviewed John Hondorp five years ago for my thesis on the development of jazz scenes! Please say hi to him if you see him, I hope he still remembers me. You got some pretty OK names on your website, I like Rob van Bavel's playing a lot and Tom Beek is a good sax player....

Greets,

JJ
