What an amazing story and remembrance! Correct me please (anyone) but my recall tells me that the street which "hugs" the courts directly to the south is 3rd street? Anyway, it's the street which serves as home to The Blue Note a few doors up from that corner. (I question myself because as I recollect, the 4th Street subway station comes up right there on that corner as well, so I ask myself, wouldn't that be 4th Street not 3rd? but for some reason, 3rd Street keeps poppin' up in my head).
As time goes on, it seems to me to be so important to remember as many details as we can because when minor things start gettin' changed around, the next thing you know, the bigger more important things start getting lost and the next thing you know we have Jaco, a pretty good guitar player instead of the world's greatest bass player!
Jaco: You know you've got that tape recorder on Duke Ellington's book! Interviewer: Which book is that? Jaco: The only one! |

Okay, a couple of things.
1) I've never read Milkowski's book; probably never will. I've always feared I'd get too annoyed (like my brother Greg did) about the incorrect relaying of details in incidents that he himself witnessed -- just like the original poster here. I guess it's pretty much inevitable in biographies, anyway. All I did when it came out (in English -- as the original publication was in Japanese -- who knows what that says?!) was check the references to me and marvel how Bill got these quotes out of me. "I said that?!" was my continual reaction in the bookstore I was in at the time. Oh well, I guess it's "close enough for government work", as they say.
2) Jaco (or more correctly "Jocko" when we were growing up until about age 22 or so -- when Darqui misspelled it and Jaco dug it) was merely an okay to pretty good basketball player. His son, John, who I just hung up with, however, (Happy Father's Day, John) is a GREAT basketball player. By the seventh grade, in early 1987, I'm certain that John could already beat his dad in a game of one and one -- and I'm sure Jaco knew it too. 'Cause Jaco HATED losing. (We could all tell millions of stories of how Jaco would react when we were playing something competitive (whether football, baseball, Jeopardy, spoons or scrabble) when it became apparent that he wasn't going to win. Of course, he wasn't the only one in the family who didn't like losing -- so I should talk, right?) I have never met (and probably never will ever meet) ANYONE as competitive and with a greater will to win than my oldest brother. So, don't get me wrong, he was always competitive on the court -- he was always "in the game" -- or else he wouldn't be on the court -- but he was not a "great basketball player". He was, however, a GREAT!! baseball player (and a very good to excellent football player -- once told me he wanted to try out for the Dolphins as a walk-on wide receiver). So it's always annoyed me all this talk of basketball, when the boy could REALLY play baseball. I knew he was going to be famous when we were growing up. Just knew it. I thought it was going to be baseball -- it turned out to be bass.
3) The name Havlicek cracks us all up in the family. Jocko would take a shot -- and he did have "hot streaks" by the way, where he would appear to be a "great basketball player" -- and if it went in, he'd say "Havlicek!" We'd all just die laughing -- 'cause it was usually some "lucky shot" that we all knew when he put it up was no way going in the bucket -- but somehow it would! (All of us in the neighborhood would do this. You know, if you're at bat and you hit a homer, you might go "Willie!" (for Willie Mays) or "Baby Bull!" (for Orlando Cepeda) or just, "Roberto!"! Or if you threw a touchdown pass, you'd yell "Johnny U!" -- Etc., etc.) Who's Havlicek, you might ask? Well, all NBA fans know (or should know) it's the original "sixth man" -- Hall of Famer, for the Boston Celtics, John Havlicek. For some reason, of all the NBA stars, Jocko would yell "Havlicek!" when it went in. (Why not "Wilt the Stilt"? I always thought -- at least he played for Philly.) It cracks me up just typing all of this. Of course when John's son, John Francis Pastorius V, was born a few years ago (it was Holy Thursday that year) I looked up to see what day the kid might share a birthday with by going to imdb. I said, "You're not going to believe this --- HAVLICEK !!" |

Lenny Charles? The reason I asked was that, without going into a long story, about 2 years ago I sort of befriended this gentleman (who's name is Lenny Charles) who, way back in the day, played sax for a some of the Motown groups and I guess had a couple of bands of his own. I had the opportunity to ask him about all this today and though he found it interesting, he said it wasn't him.
I doubted very much that it was the same person, but then how many people have the name Lenny Charles? WELL 2 ANYWAY!
Thanks for responding.
