I just purchased a new wonderful electric bass and now Iīm gonna save up for an amplifier. I went to the local musicstore a while ago and I found an Ampeg B2R with 4x10 speaker and A Hartke 3500 also with a 4x10 speaker. The problem is that the Ampeg is a lot more expensive (approx. 1500$ for amp and speaker) than the Hartke. My question is: is the ampeg worth the price or should I go for the cheaper Hartke gear. Iīve tried both amps with my own bass and I think the Ampeg sounds a little better. but I dont know wich one is the best quality-wise. Could I combine the hartke head with the Ampeg speaker or the other way round? Advise please.
How many bassplayers does it take to change a lightbulb? None, they would let the pianoplayer do it with his left hand |

Sorry for not posting some replies to your comments. Iīve been on a music week (choir singing, bass playing, drumming, whatever) and there were no computers there. Honestly, I really dont know what to do. Half of you tell me the Ampeg rocks and the rest of you seem to love Hartkes. Another amp I really like is EBS, especialy the "taurus" model with built-in chorus and octaver. Itīs also easier to take it with you īcause itīs a combo amp. Does anyone know how much you have to pay for one of those. Advice plz!

- Hi, if you are checking out a EBS you really should go to Jam (you do live in Sweden right?). They have all possible EBS amps and effects.. I think you should go for the EBS, they rock! Thereīs a lot more punch in them. Anyway, Swede if you havenīt already checked Jamīs homepage yet, do it! www.jam.se

P.S Off course they have the prices on the homepage!

HARTKE all the way!!! I've been playin' with the 3500 and the 4x10 spekers for years, and it always sounded great for me. I shifted back to GK and David Eden speakers because I didn't need all that power lately, but I still have that brilliant sound in my hears!!!
Ciao
Luca ...give me a gig! |

I personally like my little Hartke Kickback. It's wonderful to use with my Bass Pod because I can use it as a monitor and still be able to go right into a sound system. Of course, if I could, I would probably just buy a power amp and use the Pod as a front end. Then put it all out there with a good ole' Hartke cab |

| ahh, someone else named nate on this board...thats cause for confusion!!! anyhow, ill go for the simple answer..go with what sounds good with your bass....personally i dont like ampegs, they dont sound good for what i want......but victor wooten sounds great through them...and ive heard guys sound good through hartke....i use and always have used swr, i think there a great sounding amp, and unfort. who knows what will happen to them now that fender owns em, but ive never had one complaint about my swr's |

| Yes. SWRs are nice. I really wanted to get one a while back but I can't afford one. Luckily there's an SWR model on the Pod :) |

Go with Galien Krueger! G&K all the way!
But seriously, both are quality amps. And people have different ideas about what a "great amp" is. So I would go with the one that you believe is better in relation to the price tag.
That's perhaps not what you were looking for, sorry. But that's my advice |

i guess it really depends on how you liked your tone to be colored. i've always like the sound of ampeg tubes over hartke, since i like a rounder, warmer sort of sounds rather than the kind of crunchiness that i've found hartkes tend to give me. but hey, ampeg can give you crunch too, just listen to any chris squire recording out there. in my opinion tho, the nicest sounding amp that i have heard is a marshall vba 400, as odd as that may sound. i tried it with a stingray 5 fretless running into it and the thing is godly. my ideal tone would be somewhere in the ballpark of tony levin, if that helps at all. in any case, i'd take ampeg over hartke. with regard to using a hartke head with an ampeg speaker, i wouldn't recommend crossbreeding amps. i've always had the most luck sound-wise using the same kind of cab as you have for your head. then again, i have yet to try hartke with ampeg, so test it out if you can. |
