As a music lover and semi-serious bassist in D.C. I was really excited to learn that Eddie Gomez will be playing with Chick Corea and Airto at Blues Alley May 2 through May 7. Eddie is an absolute monster on the double bass, in case you do not know, and this is the first time I've ever had the opportunity to hear him live. In my opinion, he was almost on par with Scott LaFaro in his playing with the late, great Bill Evans. (Chick ain't no second rate musician himself.)

I haven't seen any info on this tour on Chick's website, so I don't know where else they'll be playing. But if you're in the D.C. area, I suggest you check it out! I'm planning on going to the Thursday May 2 show (8 pm). I'd be interested to hear from any other Jacophiles who might plan on going.

I was lucky enough to see Eddie Gomez once. We were gigging in a real schock commercial thing in the late 70's (I think that's when it was), it was a Wednesday night...nothing happeneing. Around the corner at the Red Creek (RochesterNY) we heard Mike Maneri was playing with a hot, hot drummer (Omar Hakim). We left early went over and it was Mike Maneri, Eddie Gomez, Omar Hakim, Warren Burnhard (sorry about the spelling)and Michael Brecker....WOW! They were very hot, very electric and fusion-hip...and Eddie is playing and articulating the hottest lines ever on his upright. What a night it was for me!

I live in the town where LaFaro grew up, and the place where he got tanked (and then killed in a drunken crash) with another musician he brought home is a long time hand out. The same man owns it and talks about Scott a lot.
