Pete Fargo here... I really want to congradulate you on POJ You have really nailed it!! I personally know the efforts you made over the years on recording Jocko, as you know I was with you on some of them and thank you for that. You captured on POJ the Jocko we really knew. If it werent for you we would have never been able to experience all this. It seems the good old days are gone and aren't what they used to be. But, listening to POJ brings back so many good memories of Jocko. Especially the time he brought over his upright bass to my house in Lauderdale for me to use, and as you know my 62 fender jazz he eventually got. Also the times I ran into Jocko in New York and Atlanta and He always remembered me for finding the poly poxy we used on the neck for the removed frets on his jazz bass. It was so funny when I went to seem him play in some of the clubs, he would be so surprised to see me and always say to me "the poly poxy" "the poly poxy" and He never forgot that, and seemed to be so indebted to me for that. That was flattering. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know I am very impressed with your work on POJ and the feeling of drifting back in time and remembering the Jock I knew is most enjoyable. Okay Peter, good to see your post!
Yea, slowly but surely the old rank and file are turning up.
Just to reiterate about the "poly poxy," Peter was the one who turned Jaco on to using Petit's poly epoxy on his fretless. And it was his '62 black Jazz bass that I bought and eventually traded to Jaco.
Actually the back story that nobody or few know is that Jaco initially wanted to trade Peter for the upright first! I think Pete's wife put her foot down or at least had a hand in him not trading Jaco. So, I ended up buying the bass from Peter and eventually did agree to trade Jaco for the upright. You see, Jaco didn't have any money to spare around that time because of his newly found family responsibilities. By that I mean recently having married Tracy and the birth of his first child Mary. Trading his upright was his only other option. But who really wanted his funky 3/4 upright? We were white kids wearing converse sneakers and playing in beach bands. What did we know about upright bass? It’s funny looking back now but my Mom made be get rid of that upright after about a month of it laying around the house. It resembled a shipwreck lying in the middle of this palatial and meticulously kept residence. The only action it received is when I convinced our maid at the time, and my good friend, Elisabeth, to sing along one morning to the blues. With the same tape recorder that Jaco and I used on all of the other recordings, I captured Elisabeth on her debut as a singer after she reluctantly agreed to sing something over a blues progression in G. She sang real slow, “My baby has a mouth full of gold, every time he kiss me makes my blood run cold, so I’m gonna keep on crying, till I cry my blues away.” If anyone here recognizes these lyrics please let me know. This two minute performance is one of my all time favorites and is also the only recording I have of Jaco’s first upright. Sorry to get carried away, but these are great memories.
Also, Pete and his good friend and guitarist Terry Wolters were the ones who introduced me to Clay Cropper, who they were playing with at the time at the "Four O'clock Club." Great times for sure. And I understand exactly what you meant by your comment "The good old days aren't what they used to be," but it should really have been, "The good old days are better than they used to be." The worse things seem to get on the music scene today the more those old days stand out as precious in my opinion. Nothing compares to the music scene we grew up in back in Lauderdale especially when you consider Jaco's presence in the mix. But over all; the clubs, the musicians, the music, the times. After more than a quarter century has passed that time and place seems to stand out more than ever as paradise lost.
Well, I could go on reminiscing about other stuff, but I suggest that you and I continue our catching up via email.

Excellent research my friend, that's the tune!
Well, there really isn't much more to the story Les. I was just foolin around with the upright one morning, trying to make some use of it, and as I was playing a blues progression I kept asking our maid or nanny Elisabeth to sing something. Bashfully dismissing the idea she kept saying "Go on Bob....Go on Bob." Now even this sounded cool to me. You know, a southern black woman with a southern drawl bashfully saying, "Go on Bob." Then a few minutes later out of nowhere she comes up with this "My baby has a mouth full of gold" stuff, I could hardly believe it. I mean it was really great. And Elisabeth was no singer let me make that clear. When I said that she made her singing debut that day I only meant to infer that it was her first and last time ever being recorded on tape. I can only imagine now that she must have heard those lyrics from her father's record collection, or around the house. Who knows? Maybe she had a fling with "Bumble Bee Slim" back in the day.
Anyway, there is now more to this story if you can believe it. I called my mother this morning after reminiscing about Elisabeth and the acoustic bass, and surprisingly she informed me that she still keeps in touch with her to this day. In fact, she said that Elisabeth took the bus down from Pompano not too long ago so they could spend the day together. She also gave me a contact number on her. No answer as yet.
Elisabeth was like part of the family back then. You know, she would always be there when I would came home from school and she would make sandwiches and stuff. Always good natured and Jaco knew Elisabeth too. It's too bad she isn’t more a part of the Jaco story or we could feature her on the website. Ahaaa! Well, at least she’s in my music "Hall of Fame." Now that I think of it I use to drive her home on occasion and she lived in Dania right along the same field where Jaco and I came upon Tyrone playing his sax into the opened door of an abandoned close dryer. Right across the street, I mean you could actually see her house from there. Sorry, just reminiscing.
I'll get back with a brief update if your interested Les. I am going to reach out to Elisabeth by phone. I wonder if her number is still good. Anyway, I hope she remembers that morning blues jam. If she doesn't I will have to dig up my recording and burn a CD so the grandkids can hear it. It will surely be a big hit around the house. Of course I’m visualizing her now with her loving grandchildren around her. I hope that is the case.

Since this thread is called POJ, I have a question regarding a picture in the booklet (which accompanies the c.d.) and that is....
having the common knowledge of Don Alias playing with Jaco and Joni on the drums during the Shadows and Light tours, and that just before Mingus was recorded, Tony Williams, John McLaughlin, and Jaco were asked to try some things out from Joni's Mingus material (McLaughlin and Williams were later erased from the final mix), where was this picture (page 64) taken from? It looks like a theatre and suggests either a live performance or sound check with Tony on the drums, Jaco bass guitar, Don Alias percussion, and Joni on guitar. It's just that I never knew that Tony Williams ever played drums behind Joni before except in that aforementioned situation. Any insights will be greatly appreciated.
Oh....sometimes I awaken at 4 A.M. after a good night's sleep and in the quiet of the morning, will put POJ on. There is something deeply personal about the way it starts....the crickets and then the train coming from the distance only to leave as fast as it comes (kind of like Jaco)...and I settle in for the journey. If any of you who own POJ are up at such a time of the day when there is absolutely no one stirring, try it....what a way to start the day. Anymore, I find myself reading the booklet as often as I listen to the cd. What a gift!

One possibility: UC Jazz Festival, Berkeley, Ca, '79. Hancock was also in that band. |

In reference to Brian Temple's reply ,you might be correct.In fact Wayne Shorter was part of the line-up also.The band was called Joni Mitchell's Mingus Band.....I have a conflicting date as 18th May 1977>???. Funny,it was Peter Erskine that was lined up to play,instead of Tony,but pre-contracts relating to members of W.Report got into the mix,as I understand.But as Tony Williams was appearing there with his group Liftime,he just fitted into slot. Now the page 64 photo,in the POJ booklet could be also a concert given at the Playboy Jazz Festival same circa timewise.....

(nice to see there are some cats on here who actually were around during Jaco's time). I hadn't realized that he had played in so many other situations besides the ones that get more of the general acknowledgements...i.e. Trio of Doom, Joni's Shadows and Light Tour, Weather Report and Word of Mouth (in all of its' manifestations, big band and smaller ensemble)..Brian Melvin...the West Coast guys from Pablo Cruise and Grateful Dead...geez...now I wonder just how many musicians (musical combinations) one could document in which Jaco DID play...not just his recordings but just people with whom he appeared at one time or another, in a public performance. It must be staggering!

Are you sure about Shorter?
