Here's an interview i found with Marcus Miller. He talks about jaco/slapping. It's a couple of paragraphs down.

I don't mean to start any heated discussions but i've seen a lot of threads on this and just thought i would post the article

Cool article.
One thing puzzled me; did he say "Punk Jazz" was the first Jaco tune he covered?
Hmmm...didn't he do "Teen Town" on "the sun don't lie" years ago?
Maybe he's getting old...

That's what I was asking myself too. He also did a cover of "Portrait of Tracy" some years ago, before recording this version of Punk Jazz. Very cool article though. Respect to Marcus for finding his own way and his own voice on the instrument.

That's weird. I didn't notice that when i posted it, but to get to the bottom of it i think i'm gonna put the article on Marcus' message board and see if he will answer.
Thanks for pointing it out

| The Jaco slapping thing comes up alot here on the site. What exactly is it about Jaco slapping though? Is it good that he did it or not good? Did he do slapping? Not really. Maybe a couple times? He did not invent slapping. Other bass players do slapping. Is it viable? Yes. I saw Jaco take his open hand and slap the neck. I guess that was "Jaco slapping". Is slapping real important in playing bass? Somewhat. Is Jaco associated with slapping? No. I think slapping came from back in the day with "Sly and the Family Stone". You guys ever heard them? Jaco probubly maybe was familiar with the style back then but it did not really make its' way into his style of playing. That in a nutshell just may be the whole of the Jaco slapping thing. Jaco's son is pretty good at slapping. Let's talk about him slapping. That would be fresh! |

| Yeh that's about it. Slapping is cool but there's tons of writing here on the site and it just kind of goes around and around - ya' know? |

Yeh.....the topic of Jaco slapping is quite big around here. And you know, I never really thought that Jaco had slapped on any recordings....that is until I was listening to Weather Report's 1982 self-titled album today. I was listening to the track "N.Y.C", and I could sware that in the areas of 1:50 and 2:05 (and areas around there), Jaco is either slapping or popping in some way!

I think Jaco decided early on that he didn't want slapping in his repertoire. Besides, if he really wanted to slap all he would have to do was turn to the fretted bass( which he played a lot in his later years, for example on the album Standards Zone and on his bass-instructional video "Modern Electric Bass"), but evidently he felt it wasn't his style.
Many of these questions about Jaco's playing-style and life in general are tough to answer even for those in his inner circle and are all part of the Jaco-mystique. It's hard to know what's exaggerated and what's not. I think this topic should be put to rest.
