Posted - 01/05/2004 : 08:11:20 AM I got into "jazz" through the fusion movement (I hate that term too Pat Metheny)...Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, etc. I never took the time in my youthful ignorance, to check out where all these young (at the time)players were coming from. Now 50 yrs. old, I am checking out the early Miles Davis records, Gil Evans (a very big influence on Jaco as a writer/arranger), Charlie Parker, etc.
Doing this makes me appreciate even more, Jaco's place in this beautiful thing called music history. Question 1: did Jaco indeed have a personal goal of playing with Miles (I've always heard this but never actually saw in print, any quotes by Jaco stating this)? Question 2: Any suggestions from you jazzbo's as to the best Miles Davis albums (exclude 'Kind of Blue' which I just got and Bitches Brew, with which I've been familiar a long time...)to pick up on...?
Thanks!

Jaco: You know you've got that tape recorder on Duke Ellington's book! Interviewer: Which book is that? Jaco: The only one! |

Posted - 12/30/2005 : 07:51:08 AM In regards to Jaco and Miles I read somewhere (don't believe it was a credible source) that Jaco was rejected by Miles in his later years and this was a huge dissapointment for Jaco.
The only thing I have ever read regarding Jaco and Miles together was Marcus Miller's account of writing 'Mr. Pastorius' and bringing it into Miles to do on an album. Miles' comment was something like, 'Yeah, it'll be nice to do one for Jaco'. Then, according to Marcus, Miles proceeded to just play his heart out on the song. So, if there was any negativity between Miles and Jaco, your comment was the first I heard of it.

Posted - 12/28/2005 : 4:48:11 PM I have the Cellar Door Sessions. Some really cool stuff, not to mention great bass lines. Miles is great (stating the obvious i know)
My only complaint is that the tone of the piano can be a bit harsh at times. |

I just thought i might throw that in the mix and see if anyone can deny or expand on it. I'll try and find where i read that for you guys.
Wow ... i sure do feel lucky finding and listening to all these great jazz artists and being so young, unlike the original poster who's 50! I suppose getting a head start can't hurt I've checked out (and dug) alot of them... but Miles is tough, just because he has made soo much music and it'll take me a while to weed through it all and appreciate it. Better get crackin i suppose! |
