Posted - 12/19/2003 : 6:08:00 PM i'm going to the 10:30 show tonight and i'll write in with my review monday. totally psyched to hear these charts live. vic wooten is the bassist tonight which should be interesting since it seems a little atypical of his usual style. anyone else see any of these shows?

Posted - 01/05/2004 : 12:40:03 PM hi all, mary here...
i too, like "give me bass" went to the opening night show with jimmy haslip and to victor wooten's 1st show and i was really blown away by both... the jp big band is SOOOO tight. and i concur with everything givemebass says about how great jimmy haslip's performance was and his warmth and graciousness... he is truly one of the nicest guys ever. but i have a different opinion of victor wooten's peformance which i thought was incredible (no disrespect to givemebass). i was at his 1st show, 1st night and i was really blown away. i had never seen vic play live before and i have heard comments (some on this board) saying that he overplays, slaps too much, is great technically but lacks feel, whatever whatever - so i was kind of prepared for that possibility. but i gotta tell you, i was absolutely enthralled by his performance. i thought he did my dad justice as far as honoring the original compositions, but he still managed to make it his own, i thought, very tastefully. vic definitely has his own style, but what reminded me most of my dad in his performance was the spirit in which he played. he just seemed so confident yet relaxed and really went for everything without holding back. there was a real fearlessness in his playing and that's what reminded me of my dad... actually reminded me of my cousin david as well (he's in my band queen mary) cuz he plays fearlessly too... he's a MONSTER live.
gotta go... will try to respond to some other threads later.
best, mary |

Posted - 12/31/2003 : 4:52:19 PM Hey Everyone,
Im a little late on this topic..But here's my take on the two nights I went... I saw Jimmy Haslip on opening night.. I can't put into words how amazing the show was... You could almost feel Jaco's spirit running through Jimmy as he played... From The Chicken, Used To Be A Cha Cha, Liberty City, Punk Jazz, Havona, and on and on.. I was in heaven!!! Plus, I was seated at the front table just inches from Haslip... Damn... If it could any better, it did!! I was able to hang with Jimmy at the end of the night. He was so gracious and warm.. An amazing player with an amazing heart!! Now, if that wasn't enough, I also got to meet and take a photo with Jack Pastorius, Jaco's Dad!! What a great guy!!! He kept us laughing with Jaco stories all night!! Was an amazing way to end the year!
Now, sadly, Wooten had to follow that.. Maybe thats why I was unimpressed... I was so excited to see Wooten for the first time on his first night.. He seemed bored and uninterested... His playing seemed lazy.. I don't know... He just seemed like he didn't want to be there.. I was able to meet Wooten as well at the end of the night... He was friendly enough, but again, he seemed to just want to pack his bag up and get out... Odd vibes from him!!
Im not saying Wooten sucked at all.. He didn't.. I would like to have half of his talent.. But, maybe after my night with Haslip and The Elder Pastorius, no one could compare!! Well, maybe Jaco himself ;-) |

Posted - 12/30/2003 : 07:57:58 AM Funny story....(I really struggle with sharing this one because, after 50 yrs. of living, I HONESTLY have long gotten over any attempts at trying to look like anyone but myself...)I float this one to see if the guy who approached me that night, might be a poster on this site...
Right after the band stopped playing that Saturday night, a guy approached me and asked me if I was related to the bass player (pointing toward the stage). Gerald Veasley was the guest bassist that evening, and since he is black and I am obviously not, my first thought was that maybe this was his way of starting some trouble (in which I was not interested in carrying on). I would be proud to be related to Mr. Veasley in any circumstance but am obviously not related. Fortunately, he quickly rebounded by asking me if I had ever seen any pictures of Jaco. Whew...oh...that's what you meant? Anyway, he said I looked like I could be one of his brothers. (I have never seen any of Jaco's brothers by the way). So, I told him that I was just a fan among many, but counted his comment as a compliment. I have never been accused of looking like Jaco, but I wonder if one spends enough time reflecting on and listening to his music, if one might begin to take on some of the traits...you know, like a dog with his owner or a married couple...(before we get too much serious analysis on the subject, please know that that last remark was offered tongue in cheek...). So, if you are a poster on this site and was the guy about which I speak, attending the second show (10:00 P.M.) at the Iridium, Dec. 20, let me know. I am always curious as to whether I have met an infamous poster from this site, unknowingly....

Posted - 12/29/2003 : 08:24:03 AM Wookie: you can get one of the shirts like the band was wearing from Headsup.com (I think that's the site....google search..enter heads up..and it should pop up). I forgot to mention in my comments on the concert...watching Gerald Veasley playing those bass parts underneath the band, helps one to visualize how great it must of have been to see Jaco with Word of Mouth. There is no question that, no matter how many times one might listen to a cd (even a live one), seeing it live brings it home as to just how energetic, skillful, and kinetic a Word of Mouth Big Band concert must have been (with the Great One leading the way). I listened to the 1981 Birthday cd on the way home the day after the concert, and it was easy to imagine that it was Jaco on the stand at the Iridium with the big band....or...what it was like to be in the audience that night at Mr. Pipps

Posted - 12/26/2003 : 11:18:25 PM lol sorry. i just got back on my computer. Wdent, you probably saw me coming out of the iridium, i was with a 21 year old in a leather jacket and 30 year old in a cord jacket. anyway, the show was the best experience of my life. the day in the city was cool, but the show was amazing opening up with soul intro/the chicken was amazing. its always been one of my favorite tunes. gerald veasley was great, for those of you who dont know him, he looks like a mix between pootie-tang and stevie wonder :P the band was amazing, the iridium ws definitely the best club ive ever been to. i strongly suggest going there sometime, they have les paul trio play every monday. overall it was just a great show, too bad they sold out of shirts before i could get one though :( |

Posted - 12/23/2003 : 3:35:01 PM WD-40, Congratulations on a terrific musical experience. If it was even one tenth as hot as the show I saw in '82 with Jaco fronting the big band you saw an unbelievable marriage of first-rate playing with uniquely incredible arrangements. I'm glad you got to hang in the Village and soak up some of the atmosphere in which Jaco spent a large portion of his latter years. I used to live a couple of blocks from Devonshire studios on Magnolia in N. Hollywood/Burbank where much of Weather Report's classic sessions took place. When I'd pass by I couldn't help but reflect on the musical genius of a singular band of artists that had been documented on tape in that building. Other than that L.A. doesn't offer a lot of "zones for nostalgia"... at least not that particularly matter to me.

Posted - 12/23/2003 : 07:51:36 AM I wrote this in the WDENT thread (hey...it wasn't my idea to start a thread with 'WDENT' as the subject)...but felt it better and more appropriately placed here. The band followed the charts and didn't deviate too much from the stuff as it was played on the CD...was it tight? You bet! Was it exciting? Absolutely! Was it scripted? Maybe a little more scripted than most would have liked. But, it was from the heart....and I can guarantee that. An amazing tribute to the one and only.....
The Jaco Pastorius Big Band was incredible. Gerald Veasley is a bass monster (that's a good thing). Man! There were moments when he knew he was killin', he knew we knew he was killin', and we knew he knew we knew he was killin'....these are the moments when one gets those weird things going up one's spine and in my case, I had to yell in complete joy....the band was kickin' everyone's ass. What a joy to hear such tight and powerful lines coming from a horn section that is so in sync with the rythm section that we all are one!!!! Special mention for Larry Warrilow who stands in the shadows but obviously plays a big role in every aspect of the way the band sounds out front...and kudos to Peter Graves for making sure Larry got his recognition throughout the night...(oh yeah...that drummer was nailin' us to the wall and we liked it). Went down to the Village during Saturday morning, just to kind of reflect on Jaco's life down there....(that's another thread)....Wookie where are you?????

Posted - 12/22/2003 : 9:53:23 PM Unless things have changed since I read up on them, they are only playing a couple of shows in a couple of cities. Bummer for me and other fans, but I understand. Hopefully they've made a recording or video of it, but I doubt it will be available commercially. I bet that was cool. I'm a huge Victor fan and would like to have heard his take on some of that stuff. He's so different than Jaco, of course, and a very respectful person so I'm sure he treated the songs right. And his warp speed technique came in handy, I'm sure, for some of those "impossible" Jaco licks! David |

Posted - 12/22/2003 : 5:37:46 PM hey all, checked the show on friday. arrived at 10PM for what i thought was a 10:30 show which turned out to be lucky since the show actually started at about 10:10. the band (about 15 pieces or so) took the stage with vic wooten on bass and started out with soul intro/the chicken. victor did a great job of interpreting the material through his own voice. he played a 4-string fretless, which gave him a little more of a jaco-ish tone than usual, but still sounded like victor. it was interesting to hear some of the differences. on the chicken, vic's notes were phrased a little shorter than the way jaco played it, which gace it a bouncier sort of feel, and he played a slightly different line on liberty city. vic was doing his best to respect the compositions - really concentrating on the arrangements and nailing it. i'm remembering how he sounded on 3 views - just playing every whole note with so much concentration and feeling. and he also played a sick vic wooten style introduction on continuum. peter graves talked between every tune, which was cool, but i would have liked to hear some songs back to back to build some heat and momentum. and it would have been cool to have a badass guest soloist like bob mintzer or chris potter sit in with the band like the guest bassist vibe. overall, it was amazing to hear these compositions live (besides the ones i mentioned, they also played havona, opus pocus, teen town, and elegant people). i was just smiling and grooving the whole time. i hope you guys get a chance to catch the band when it comes to a town near you. one final thought - it would be really cool to get felix pastorius on stage with the group. |
