Posted - 07/20/2003 : 05:39:01 AM I just purchased a new wonderful electric bass and now I´m gonna save up for an amplifier. I went to the local musicstore a while ago and I found an Ampeg B2R with 4x10 speaker and A Hartke 3500 also with a 4x10 speaker. The problem is that the Ampeg is a lot more expensive (approx. 1500$ for amp and speaker) than the Hartke. My question is: is the ampeg worth the price or should I go for the cheaper Hartke gear. I´ve tried both amps with my own bass and I think the Ampeg sounds a little better. but I dont know wich one is the best quality-wise. Could I combine the hartke head with the Ampeg speaker or the other way round? Advise please.
How many bassplayers does it take to change a lightbulb? None, they would let the pianoplayer do it with his left hand |

Posted - 12/23/2004 : 12:11:50 AM If your talking those old Trace V-type heads, I second that! Too bad they are hard to find, and pricey. Pre-Gibson all the way.
I just got my Ashdown the other day, I'm really likeing it so far. Ashdown is the same engineers as pre-Gibson Trace, fans of Trace tone should check out Ashdown. Especcially when the MAG 300 is less than $400 shipped!

Posted - 12/22/2004 : 11:48:47 PM Man, I'd have to say Hartke..They're indestructable..I've got a little kickback 12 practice amp, and it sounds great..I like Ampeg too though..But there's so many great amps out there...SWR Goliaths, SVTs, Gallien Kruger, Trace Elliot has MONSTER tone, Eden, Crate bass amps are great too, it really just depends on what style you want to play, but overall I'd go with Trace Elliot. |

I don't think so. From what I know, Acoustics were 100% solid state. I'm always hearing something different about them though, so I could be wrong.

Posted - 12/06/2004 : 10:26:19 PM When it comes to cabs, go for Eden. Compared to Ampeg, they aren't any heavier, but WAY more efficient. That means that the same amp, bass and settings will be quite a bit louder. They also have a clearer sound.
For heads, if you can't decide between the warmth of Ampeg and the attack of Hartke, get an Ashdown MAG 300. Its cheap, about $350 shipped, and it'll do a bit of both and its own thing to boot.

Posted - 12/05/2004 : 11:56:41 PM as far as cabinets go, if u you aint willing to muscle it out go with hatrke they are far far far far far lighter (which tells you how they are built, mostly out of particle board which dosent risinate solidly) ampeg cabs are brutal to move especially if you are a little wimp like me, but for the love of music i have been known to lug the 4x10 classic enclosure up two flights of stairs by my self. If you go ampeg try to pick the cab that is the deepest (which means NOT the 6x10) you will be amased at how the bass sounds out of a 4x10 no 15 needed...... the 6x10 is not as deep and in my opinion does not cut it. so i am saying ampeg cabs are built for the road and have a supreeme sound. Hartke's are cheep, true, but if you go with a hartke but thier top of the line model or you will be dissapointed. as far as amlpfiers go, SVT3pro by ampeg is the best for the buck, this hybrid is an unbelievable tone chamilion, seriously dude, if you want chrunch to make peoples ears bleed you got it, you want a warm gental tube crackle that will (in my opinion make you sound like you are playing acoustically) that will make phlem fly from your victems throats you got it. not only that but for like $70 you get a 7 year travel warrenty on ampeg cabs and amplifiers.
if you love your self you'll go ampeg, if you just wanna get by you'll do hartke.
also Jaco probably played hartke cause that was his thing he also used solid state amps but most of us still prefer the tubes or hybrids you shouldnt make your choice on who does what.
long story short ampegs are built by people who care hence the price hartkes are built to sell, also hence the price.
I have heard good things about SWR for affordability and quality GK, and trace elliot as well, spend wisely musical equiptment is like cars they depresiate in value once off the lot until they are vintage.
oh yeah ampegs solid state stuff is great too, hey they lookin for any sales guys?

Posted - 12/05/2004 : 6:52:10 PM I had 2 810 and one 300w 78 SVT rig and now SVT classic HLF 410 ported with horn and GK RB800 Bi-amp and BAGEND bandpass 115 that runs along with Fender M80 115 for upper mids. I also favor Ampeg over Hartke. I checked the H 410 aluminum against the SVT classic and at 20 feet the SVT cab preformed better as agreed by those listening to the test. They told me if you get the aluminum cold in the H's that they would need to warm up first to sound right. That made cents and I went with the Ampeg. Glad I did. It is a great cabinet when combined with another cab with a 15 in it. Epifani cabs sound good but I don't have that. I really want to hear a Glockenclang (spell check). How 'bout them apples? |
