Posted - 07/07/2005 : 5:35:17 PM A few days ago on the 4th of July, I was fortunate to experience the Gregg Rolie Band at an outdoor festival pretty much in my own back yard. For those too young to remember, Gregg Rolie was the vocalist-organist in the original Santana band, and later in Journey. Gregg's band also includes original Santana conga player, Michael Carabello. The bassist was the legendary Alphonso Johnson, and needless to say, I was gearing up for weeks prior to this concert! As usual, I had to let most of my friends know just who Gregg and Alphonso were. Alphonso appeared very confident, yet humble, while laying down some of the funkiest and heaviest grooves imaginable...serving the music with a big smile! Later, I got to meet him, and the others, and talk to him for all too short a time. It was an inspirational evening for sure!

I love Santana and I've been meaning to get my hands on some Alphonso Johnson, this seems like a good band for both, so did they actually record any albums together? I'd love to hear this.

Jr., they play just what you think they play, with Gregg's new material interspersed among the early Santana stuff he originally did. Alphonso seemed content just to be in the pocket... in other words, no flashy solos, or showing off, but maintaining a really strong and funky presence. He seems like a laid-back, really nice guy.

Posted - 07/08/2005 : 09:34:22 AM I saw Alphonso with Santana once. It was a Santana and Wayne Shorter tour. Both guys on stage together. This must have been about 15 years ago but I still remember how great it was. I remember Alphonso had a solo spot where he started playing a Led Zepplin riff and the crowd really ate it up. Anyone else see this tour?
Yeah man...early Santana with Greg Rolie was incredible. Who was that bass player back then? David Brown? Great Player. I heard a rumor that he spent some time in prison. Maybe someone has some info on him.
